SUMMER 2022
The Songbird Forest Concert Series
For three Sundays in June and July, we proudly hosted an afternoon of music under the trees of the endangered SongBird Forest. Three very unique and wonderful performances by local musicians took place in two naturally acoustic venues, The Soaring Eagle Stage and The Mossy Stage. This event was uniquely suited to those who love both music and hiking. The walks in were 40 minutes and 15 minutes respectively and both involved a steep incline. Each concert presented a learning opportunity emphasizing the connection between sound, emotion and place.

About the Songbird Forest
The endangered Songbird Forest, located above the community of xwesam (Roberts Creek) on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded shíshálh swiya (lands), is under threat to be clearcut by the Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF), a logging company owned by the District of Sechelt.
The Elphinstone Logging Focus is campaigning to save the forest and describes why connecting and preserving the forest is so important: “Step into this forest on the right day (early morning and evening is best) you’ll be welcomed by the sweet chorus of birds singing for their own delight or for inter-species communication. Winter Wrens, Sparrows, Juncos, Flickers, Red-headed Woodpeckers and Ravens can be heard throughout the shrub and forest canopy. Follow the trail to the rocky bluffs and you may see overhead Eagles soaring above on the updraft provided by these warmer zones”.
How to get there
Turn up off Highway 101 at the traffic lights in Roberts Creek onto Lockyer Road heading straight head north for two kilometres. At the top of Lockyer Road the paved road will end and with the start of the dirt Wilson Forest Service Road (FSR). At the top of this Wilson FSR, the road turns to the left (west) after the first bridge crossing Flume Creek. Drive for 3 kilometres to the trailhead crossing over the East Wilson Creek Bridge along the way. Look for a flagging and LFI signs on the right marking the trailhead.
How to help save the Songbird Forest
The forest in which you have experienced this afternoon’s performance is scheduled to be logged this Fall by the Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF), a logging company owned by the District of Sechelt. Please help prevent this from happening by contacting the SCCF and asking that they cancel the three cutblocks in the Songbird Forest without delay.
